What Drives Us

Got Questions? We’ve got answers!
My family just bought our first gun and have no training. Is this class for us?
Are my kids old enough for this program?
We typically suggest that the minimum age for kids participating in this class is 10 years old. However, you know your kids better than we do, and it’s important to take their maturity level into account. We will be working with live firearms and ammunition, and it’s vitally important for them to be able to act in a responsible manner through the class. All participants will be expected to adhere to our safety rules and sign our Code of Conduct, and if they are not able to adhere to this, they may be asked to sit out for the range time of the program.
We do make exceptions to our age minimum, and will accept kids as young as 8 on a case-by-case basis. If you have a mature and responsible 8 or 9 year old who you would like to bring to our class, please reach out to us at info@SaferFamiliesFA.com and we will set up a quick, 5-10 minute phone or Zoom interview with you and your child, so that we may evaluate if they are ready to participate in the program.
What is the S.A.F.E.R. System?
S.A.F.E.R. stands for Safety Rules, Action Plans, Firearms Training, Extended Education, and Responsibilities.
Over the course of the day, we will spend time focusing on each of these core areas of our system, which we have identified as the most important aspects of safely and responsibly keeping firearms in your home. For more details on each of these items, please visit our About the S.A.F.E.R. System page.
I don't currently own a gun, but we're getting ready to buy one. Can my family participate in this program?
Depending on the range your selected program will be taking place at, rentals may be available from the range. However, at this time, if rentals are not available from the range, you may need to borrow a gun from a friend or family member for the class. Feel free to reach out to us at info@SaferFamiliesFA.com for more information about rental availability.
What will we spend the day doing in this class?
First of all, please note that this is a full-day course. On any day we’re holding the class, please plan to arrive between 8:30 and 9:00 AM, and expect to be there until about 6:00 PM
The first half of the day, we’ll be focusing on basic safety and handling, as well as a combination of dry-fire drills using replica firearms and live-fire drills on the range.
After our lunch break during the second half of the day, we’ll be focusing on exploring and creating both Safety Plans and Action Plans, proper procedures for storage in the home, and what proper firearms maintenance entails. We’ll also be taking time for a second live-fire range session during our second half of the day!
Will my kids have an opportunity to shoot?
As part of their class fee, we provide a .22LR pistol and ammunition for each child who is participating in our program.
By doing this, we are able to ensure that the kids are learning how to use a firearm that will not be overwhelming for them to learn to shoot.
How many people will be in the class?
To help ensure a safe learning environment, and to ensure a level of personalized training, we cap the class at 12 adults and 12 kids.
What do we need to bring to the class? What is provided for us?
- Workbook and other training materials
- Replica firearms to use for dry-fire and handling practice in class
- .22LR Pistols, Ammunition, and Ear & Eye protection for each child in the class
Every adult in the class will need to bring the following:
- 1 or 2 pistols per couple, chambered in the following calibers: .22LR, .380ACP, 9mm, .357, .38 Special, 40S&W, or .45ACP/Colt
- 100 rounds of factory ammunition for your specific gun, for each adult. (Remanufactured is OK, but please no hand-loaded ammunition). Please be sure to check your confirmation email for any ammunition restrictions placed on what you can shoot at the range we will be conducing our class at.
- Ear and Eye protection for each person (we will have some available to use if you need, but if you have your own, please bring it)
- Your favorite pen or pencil, and a great attitude!
For each child who is participating in the class, please bring the following:
- If you already own your own eye & ear protection, please feel free to bring it. However, we do have kid’s sized equipment for them to use.
- Your favorite pen or pencil, and a great attitude!
Please remember to bring your own snacks, water, and lunch. We will be taking a break mid-day for lunch, and we encourage you to enjoy your snacks as you need them!
Am I going to have to hear a bunch of political nonsense in this class?
We strive to conduct our classes in an environment that is open to everyone’s beliefs, and encourage all who enter to focus on their learning about safety and preparedness.
