Co-Founder & Lead Adult Instructor

Dean Janka

Our co-founder and lead adult instructor, Dean Janka, has been shooting for nearly three decades and training others how to do so for another decade.

Dean began shooting rifles competitively at the age of 7 and was considered a professional marksman by the NRA at 10 years old. At 16, he spent his Saturdays shooting skeet and trap both recreationally and competitively. In 2008, Dean enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served four years as infantryman with the 1st Battalion of the 9th Marine regiment. Although he attended the School of Infantry to train as basic rifleman, he spent his first two years with his unit serving as a heavy machine gunner, deploying on Navy vessels for 7 months to assist with the Haiti Earthquake relief and train foreign military personnel in multiple countries around the Persian Gulf.

After returning from his first deployment, Dean tried out for and was accepted into his unit’s Scout Sniper platoon where he spent the remaining two years of his time in the Marines. In Scout Sniper Platoon, Dean was trained in advanced marksmanship, field craft, reconnaissance, and medical treatment for combat trauma. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 for 7 months and was involved in over 150 direct fire engagements with enemy forces. Upon returning home, he spent the next 8 months training his junior Marines in a multitude shooting and military skills and functioned as a range coach for his unit.

Since leaving the military in 2012, Dean has remained up to date on his knowledge of firearms, tactics, and training techniques and has instructed many a novice in both beginner and advanced skills. His personal career as a weapons instructor started out with training his friends and family in basic firearms familiarization and usage, and as a result, he delivers a unique experience that combines his professional expertise with a gentle and understanding approach that can turn any student into someone that is safe and responsible, as well as confident and capable, with firearms.
